ModbusRTU Scanner by Casey is a lightweight, practical utility for discovering and interrogating Modbus RTU devices on RS-485 networks. It helps technicians and engineers quickly identify active slave IDs, verify serial settings, read and write registers and coils, and monitor live data for commissioning and troubleshooting.

Key features:

  • Network scanning: Probe slave IDs (1–247) across available COM ports and quickly test common serial settings to find responsive devices.
  • Flexible serial configuration: Set baud rate, parity, data bits, stop bits, timeouts, and retries to match your network.
  • Full Modbus function support: Read and write coils and registers (functions 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 15, 16).
  • Clear data views: Interpret values as 16/32-bit signed or unsigned integers, 32-bit floating point (IEEE 754), and bitfields, with selectable endianness.
  • Live polling: Continuously read points at adjustable intervals to observe device behavior in real time.
  • Diagnostics you can trust: See timeouts, CRC errors, and Modbus exception codes with plain-language explanations to speed up troubleshooting.
  • Request/response inspector: View raw frames in hex alongside a decoded breakdown to validate message structure.
  • Point management: Save labeled address maps, organize devices, and export or import CSV files for repeatable test setups.
  • Safe write operations: Read-only mode by default, with confirmation prompts for any writes to prevent unintended changes.
  • Logging and reporting: Record sessions and export results to CSV to document tests and share findings.
  • Hardware friendly: Works with standard COM ports and common USB-to-RS-485 adapters—no special drivers required beyond the adapter.

Ideal for:

  • Field technicians, system integrators, automation engineers, and maintenance teams who need a fast, reliable way to commission, validate, and troubleshoot Modbus RTU installations.

Typical uses:

  • Commissioning RS-485 segments, verifying wiring and termination, confirming device configuration, reproducing field issues, and creating acceptance test records.
